Prepared Hero Water Leak Detector FAQ
Setup & Installation
Q: What comes in the box?
The package includes:
- Water Leak Detector
- 2 AAA Batteries
- Battery Compartment Opening Tool
- User Manual
Q: How do I install the batteries?
- Use the included opening tool.
- Press inward and rotate clockwise to open the battery compartment.
- Insert two AAA batteries.
- Close the compartment securely.
- The detector will automatically power on.
Q: How do I test the detector?
Press the TEST button for approximately 1 second.
The detector will:
- Flash the indicator light
- Sound the alarm for approximately 2 seconds
Q: Where should I place the detector?
Install the detector anywhere water leaks are likely to occur, including:
- Under sinks
- Near water heaters
- Beside washing machines
- Near water purifiers
- Along underfloor heating pipes
- Basements
- Around toilets
- Near dishwashers
Place the detector so the water sensing contacts can easily reach any leaking water.
Water Detection
Q: How does the detector detect water?
The detector uses four water sensing contacts located on the bottom of the unit.
When two sensing contacts are bridged by water, the detector immediately activates the alarm.
Q: Will it detect small leaks?
Yes.
The detector is designed to detect both:
- Small water leaks
- Larger water overflows
Q: Will it detect pure or distilled water?
Pure (deionized) water has very low conductivity.
Because of this, the detector may be less sensitive and may not always trigger an alarm immediately.
Alarm Operation
Q: What happens when water is detected?
When water touches the sensing contacts:
- The local alarm sounds immediately.
- The LED indicator flashes.
- The Tuya Smart App sends a notification (if connected to Wi-Fi).
Q: How long does the alarm sound?
Initial alarm:
- 15 seconds
If water remains present:
- The detector alarms again every 15 seconds for 2 seconds.
Continuous immersion:
- The detector continues alarming for up to 24 hours, then automatically stops.
Q: How do I stop the alarm?
Remove the detector from the water and dry the sensing contacts.
Approximately 10 seconds after the contacts are completely dry, the detector automatically resets.
Q: Can I silence the local alarm?
Yes.
Within the Tuya Smart App you can disable the local sound and light alarm while continuing to receive mobile push notifications.
Extension Probe
Q: What is the extension probe used for?
The extension probe allows water detection in locations where the main detector cannot easily be placed.
Examples include:
- Tight spaces
- Behind appliances
- Along walls
- Inside cabinets
Q: Does the extension probe trigger the alarm?
Yes.
When the probe contacts water, it immediately activates the detector alarm.
Q: Can multiple extension probes be connected?
No.
Connecting multiple probes in parallel is not recommended because it reduces detection sensitivity.
Q: Can the extension probe stay underwater permanently?
Only the metal sensing contacts are waterproof.
The cable connectors should not remain submerged for extended periods.
Tuya Smart App
Q: Which app should I use?
Use the Tuya Smart App available for:
- Apple App Store
- Google Play Store
Q: Does the detector support Bluetooth?
Yes.
Bluetooth is used only during setup to simplify pairing.
Q: Does the detector require Wi-Fi?
Yes.
Remote notifications require a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
The detector is not compatible with 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
Q: How do I pair the detector?
- Install the batteries.
- Hold the TEST/Reset button for approximately 5 seconds.
- The indicator will flash rapidly.
- Open the Tuya Smart App.
- Tap Add Device.
- Select the Water Leak Detector.
- Connect to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
Q: What is AP Mode?
AP Mode allows the detector to communicate directly with your phone without internet access.
Use AP Mode if:
- Wi-Fi setup fails
- No internet is available
Limitations:
- Local alarm works normally.
- Push notifications are unavailable.
- Remote monitoring is unavailable until normal Wi-Fi pairing is restored.
Notifications
Q: Why am I not receiving notifications?
Verify all of the following:
In the Tuya Smart App
Me → Settings → Message Notifications
Enable:
- Security Device Alarm Push
On your phone
Allow the Tuya Smart App to use:
- Notifications
- Background Activity
- Auto Start
Both app and phone permissions must be enabled.
Smart Automation
Q: Can the detector work with other smart devices?
Yes.
Using Tuya Smart automation, leak detection can trigger actions such as:
- Closing a compatible smart water valve
- Activating a smart siren
- Turning on lights
- Starting security camera recording
Battery
Q: What batteries does the detector use?
The detector uses:
- 2 AAA batteries
Q: How long do the batteries last?
The manual does not specify an expected battery life.
Battery life depends on usage and alarm frequency.
Q: How will I know when the batteries are low?
The detector provides several warnings:
Hardware:
- Red LED flashes three times every 20 seconds.
App:
- "Battery Low" notification.
The detector continues detecting leaks, but:
- Alarm volume decreases.
- Alarm duration becomes shorter.
Replace the batteries promptly.
Offline Operation
Q: Will the detector still work if Wi-Fi is disconnected?
Yes.
Without Wi-Fi:
- The local alarm continues to function.
- Mobile notifications will not be sent.

Troubleshooting
Q: The detector won't pair with the app.
Try the following:
- Confirm you're using a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
- Hold the reset button for 5 seconds until the LED flashes rapidly.
- Move the detector closer to your router.
- Restart the Tuya Smart App.
- Try AP Mode if EZ Mode fails.
Q: The detector doesn't alarm when I plug in the extension probe.
This is normal.
Simply inserting the probe may not trigger the alarm.
Test the probe by placing the metal contacts in water. If the alarm activates, the probe is functioning correctly.
Q: The detector appears offline.
Check:
- Wi-Fi signal strength
- Router connection
- Tuya App status
- Battery level
If necessary, reset and pair the detector again.
Escalation
Escalate the case to the Product Team if:
- The detector fails to power on after installing new batteries.
- The detector cannot pair after completing all troubleshooting steps.
- The detector does not alarm when the sensing contacts are submerged in water.
- The issue is not covered in this FAQ.
